Trainee Solicitor Vacancy
Hann & Co are recruiting for a Trainee Solicitor to start work in Q2 (or potentially Q3) 2018.
Hann & Co Solicitors are a full service law-firm founded in Dumfriesshire but which now has an office in Edinburgh too.
Given the firm’s rural office in Annan and our city office in Edinburgh, we have a varied client based from individuals who may be struggling financially to retired persons to SME clients involved in significant corporate and commercial transactions.
Our practice areas include:
- Dispute Resolution – for both individual and commercial clients – we regularly act for clients in Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland and also the Court of Session; the subject-matter of the disputes we act in are vast (anything from judicial review to commercial actions to personal injury)
- Residential Conveyancing
- Private Client – advising clients on wills, powers of attorneys and administering deceased estates.
- Corporate and Commercial – non-contentious transactional and advisory work including share purchase and asset sale transactions.
A small portion of our work involves criminal defence, almost exclusively for privately-funded clients. Given the rural nature of our Dumfriesshire office we aim to help clients with any legal problem they bring us and, should the matter be outwith our expertise, know where to refer them too.
The successful candidate will be expected to shoulder significant responsibility from an early stage although full support and training will be provided. You can expect to have client contact from the commencement of your traineeship.
Whilst due regard will be taken of the successful applicant’s preferences, they will be require to be capable and willing to turn their hand to work across the full spectrum of the firm’s practice areas. However dispute resolution will feature prominantly in this role.
Such is the nature of our firm you may find yourself starting your day negotiating and drafting a commercial lease and an hour later advising a vulnerable client regarding court proceedings in which she may be made homeless.
Whilst no previous advocacy experience (such as mooting) is required, a willingness and confidence to appear in court on your own (with appropriate training and guidance) will be expected. I
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be based principally in our Edinburgh office, however, they will require to be flexible and travel to cover the firm’s requirements. Both the Edinburgh and Dumfriesshire office have an active and loyal client-base. Due to our relationship with various firms in England, we do receive a number of cross-border instructions and a not insignificant number of our clients reside in England. Given that we litigate in courts throughout Scotland, we are sometimes required to travel significant distances to attend court.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working under pressure and with a significant degree of responsibility. A significant amount of independence and confidence will be required. An ability to work independently (albeit subject to supervision) balanced with an awareness of when you need to ask for assistance is key.
We are looking for strong academics – our two most recent trainees both graduated with First Class Honours degrees – but what you can do now is more important to us than what you have done in the past.
A willingness to travel is a must and whilst not essential, a full clean driver’s licence and access to your own vehicle is desirable. A flexible approach together with a “can do” attitude is a must. We are looking for someone who, when faced with a problem, wants to find out how it can be solved rather than providing a list of reasons why it can’t be solved.
It goes without saying that you will require to either hold, or be eligible, to hold an Entrance Certificate issued by the Law Society of Scotland.
Applications should be made in writing in the first instance to email@example.com or Hann & Co Solicitors, Conference House, 152 Morrison Street, Edinburgh, EH3 8EB before the closing date of 23rd April 2018.
No agencies please.
